UMEZ Launches Leadership Grants Program to Strengthen Upper Manhattan's Cultural Organizations
The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation (UMEZ) today announced the inaugural cohort of recipients of its new Leadership Grants Program, designed to provide flexible, multi-year investments in four nonprofit cultural organizations that strengthen neighborhoods across Harlem, East Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. Today’s announcement is the latest in a long legacy of community cultural grants, predicated on the belief that viable and vibrant cultural organizations have a direct impact on community economic vitality and development.

Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) today applauded the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation’s (“UMEZ”) Economic Recovery and Capacity Building Grant program. The program awards $300,000 in grants to six local organizations that have each played a vital role in assisting communities most affected by pandemic-related job losses through upskilling, reskilling, and supportive services. These recipients, ranging from multi-service organizations to community-based workforce development entities, have helped fortify the local workforce ecosystem in Upper Manhattan amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the community’s recovery.
