Cement technology innovator Sublime Systems has completed award negotiations with the U.S. Department of Energy for an up-to $87 million award for its next-generation, clean cement manufacturing plant in Holyoke, Mass. Sublime will now commence site engineering and design, site characterization, and permitting, and continue its engagement with the Holyoke community focused on training and workforce development for the good-paying job opportunities Sublime’s plant will provide.

Low-carbon cement technology leader Sublime Systems and Microsoft have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) indicating their intent to negotiate a contract for the purchase of environmental attribute certificates (EACs) generated from Sublime’s first commercial facilities. The outcomes of this collaboration are intended to inform the development of a book and claim market and demonstrate the impact that this innovative model can have on the decarbonization of the cement and concrete sector, which currently accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions.

Local, state, and federal officials convened with executives representing union labor and the construction industry at One Boston Wharf, to unveil the first sidewalk made with low-carbon Sublime Cement™, following an earlier integration in the building’s interior concrete lobby.

WS Development and Sublime Systems today announced the first-ever commercial application of low-carbon Sublime Cement™, manufactured by Sublime Systems, which spun out of MIT in 2020. The concrete placement is located in the indoor public space of WS Development’s One Boston Wharf, Boston's largest net-zero-carbon office building, in the Seaport district.

Sublime Systems — which is advancing a fossil-fuel-free, scalable, drop-in replacement for traditional cement in concrete — was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) to begin award negotiations for up to $87 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act funding as part of the Industrial Demonstrations Program (IDP). Sublime’s First Commercial Electrochemical Cement Manufacturing project was selected as one of 33 projects across more than 20 states to receive up to a total of $6 billion to demonstrate commercial-scale decarbonization solutions needed to move energy-intensive industries toward net-zero while strengthening local economies, creating, and maintaining high-quality jobs, and eliminating harmful emissions that jeopardize public health. Sublime had previously announced it selected the site for its first commercial manufacturing facility in Holyoke, Mass., a city that once manufactured most of the paper in the United States.

The company has signed an agreement for 16 acres in the city’s Flats neighborhood on Water Street, on a property that formerly housed paper mills and is powered by Holyoke’s robust hydroelectric resources — critical infrastructure for Sublime’s fully electrified cement manufacturing process.

Today Dr. Leah Ellis, chief executive officer and co-founder of Sublime Systems, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) on the unique position the federal government holds in accelerating the decarbonization of heavy industry such as cement. Sublime Systems is working to reduce the carbon footprint of cement — currently responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions — by commercializing technology to manufacture the only fossil-fuel-free, scalable, drop-in replacement for ordinary portland cement (OPC) in concrete.

Sublime Systems, developers of the only fossil-fuel-free, scalable, drop-in replacement for traditional cement in concrete, announced a screening life cycle assessment (LCA) validating its process can eliminate more than 90% of the global warming potential (GWP) of cement manufacturing, when compared to today’s ordinary portland cement (OPC). Climate Earth, the leading provider of environmental product declarations (EPDs) for the concrete industry, conducted this LCA according to a widely accepted industry method, avoiding controversial and unproven offset methodologies frequently used to enable the continued burning of fossil fuels — such as carbon capture, forestry credits, co-product mineralization, and lifetime CO2 absorption.

Sublime Systems, developers of the only fossil-fuel-free, scalable, drop-in replacement for traditional cement in concrete, announced that its product has obtained ASTM C1157 designation. This industry standard specifies performance requirements across parameters including strength development, durability, and low shrinkage and cracking, and is being increasingly adopted as the industry moves towards performance-based standards. Obtaining the ASTM C1157 designation enables Sublime Cement™ to be used compliantly under major U.S. and international building codes, unlocking a path for it to replace OPC at scale and massively lower the carbon output of global construction infrastructure.

Sublime Systems, a developer of technology to produce decarbonized cement, today announced that it has closed a $40 million Series A funding round, led by climate-tech focused fund Lowercarbon Capital with participation from existing investors including The Engine, Energy Impact Partners and others. Siam Cement Group, the largest cement producer in Southeast Asia, is also joining as a strategic investor. The company will use the new capital to ramp up production at its pilot plant, build its team, conduct product testing, and advance offtake commitments from new customers and partners.
