As World Patient Safety Day approaches, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is celebrating the milestone of 7,000 health care professionals who have earned the Certified Professional in Patient Safety™ (CPPS) credential. Certification requires a combination of education, experience, and successful completion of the evidence-based certification exam. This includes more than 1,000 students, staff, and faculty from the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is the first medical education program in the world to incorporate the CPPS review course and exam as a required part of the curriculum.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and The DAISY Foundation today announced the recipients of the 10th annual DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Safety. The individual recipient is Dima Afra, RN, from American University of Beirut Medical Center – the first nurse outside the US to receive the individual honor. The team award goes to the Nurse Navigator Program from Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has launched an Age-Friendly System-Wide Spread Collaborative, engaging 30 US health systems to accelerate and spread adoption of evidence-based, high-quality care for older adults across all of their sites and care settings. The Collaborative is the latest endeavor of the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative, which has recognized 3,907 care settings as Age-Friendly since 2018, benefiting 3.29 million older adults who have received age-friendly care centered around what matters to them and their families.

IHI achieved this milestone just 14 months after celebrating 5,000 certificants, representing a 20% increase in CPPS professionals since 2022, which is the fastest pace of growth since the credentialing program began in 2012.

The Hemodialysis Team at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital in San Antonio, Texas receives the team award. The individual award goes to Jeffrey Schultz, MSN, APRN, ANP-BC, CCNS, CCRN, of UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

Dr. Kedar Mate, President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), kicked-off the IHI Forum 2022 today by calling for collective action to address health equity. He urged the audience of health and health care professionals to change the narrative around inequities, “to understand them not as inevitabilities, but as things that we can, in fact, improve. Building off the success and lessons of two previous Pursuing Equity cohorts dating back to 2017, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is now accepting applications for its new Pursuing Equity Learning Network and Action Community that will run from January 2023-June 2024.
