Acclaimed journalist and author Andrew L. Urban has recently launched his new book, Presumption of Evil, which explores the troubling case of Noel Greenaway, an elderly man wrongfully convicted of serious crimes based solely on decades-old allegations, without solid evidence. Released in February 2024, the book is a result of Urban's extensive investigation into Greenaway's case, and sheds light on the dangerous consequences of a justice system that fails to uphold the fundamental principles of fairness.
The case revolved around accusations made by five women, who, as teenagers, had been in a juvenile institution. Despite never mentioning the alleged abuse before, they came forward simultaneously years later, accusing Greenaway of physical abuse. With no physical evidence or previous complaints, Greenaway, a respected member of his community, was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the age of 80.
In discussing the motivations behind his book, Urban stated, “What inspired me to write Presumption of Evil was the deep concern that the justice system sometimes becomes influenced by a desire to punish, rather than seek out the truth. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse undeniably shaped public opinion, creating an environment where the accused are often presumed guilty without the necessary evidence. As I examined Greenaway’s case, I became increasingly alarmed by how this presumption of guilt has taken hold in our society. In my book, I challenge this process and assert that justice must always be based on solid evidence, not just accusations." “The book offers a detailed account of Greenaway's struggle within a justice system that seemed to prioritize the need to punish offenders over the pursuit of truth. The book highlights how, in some cases, the desire for retribution can lead to the wrongful conviction of the innocent,” he added.
Presumption of Evil examines the thin line between justice and wrongful conviction in cases of alleged abuse. Urban’s work challenges readers to reflect on a system that must balance fairness and due process for both the accuser and the accused.
Presumption of Evil is now available on Amazon and other major book retailers.
