Surprisingly, Intimate Robots Never Exhibited Before: Cybernetic Existentialism
The eye-opening art movement’s role in history is being explored in Genova.

Genova, Italy - Stirring discussions engulf the city of Genova, fueled by the current exhibit by Ruffo Caselli (Florence 1932–Ovada 2020), entitled Cybernetic Existentialism. Hosted at Via degli Archi, 39, the retrospective is curated by esteemed gallerist and collector Mario Moneta, in partnership with Promotrice Belle Arti Liguria, San Donato Gallery, and the Center for the Multidisciplinary Study of Cybernetic Existentialism—the conversation hub founded by Carmen Gallo.

A newly unveiled video documents the life and achievements of the artist, introduced by musician Umberto Maria Tiesi, who created a special composition for the occasion.

Spanning over five decades, Caselli’s work exemplifies his unique blend of technology and art. Expert brushstrokes infuse circuits and microchips with vibrant oil colors, giving them a lifelike quality. This visionary approach offers a satirical perspective, anticipating the future of technology and society. Caselli’s theatrical absurdity serves as a sharp reflection of reality.

Robot technology, a recurring theme in Caselli’s pieces, evolves continually to resemble human forms. The exhibit showcases these humanoids performing tasks devoid of emotion. Are they merely machines or human-like creations? Do they operate on programmed responses instead of feelings? To many visitors’ surprise, the exhibit includes two paintings of hyper-realistic sex robots, dated 2007 and 2008, which boldly display their programmed functions on their bellies. This unexpected inclusion sparks curiosity and builds anticipation for the previously undisclosed sex robot collection from the early 1970s. With eloquence and wit, Caselli’s past works provide a stark representation of today’s market for robotic technology, reflecting the foresight he possessed.

Throughout his career, Caselli’s viewpoint has ranged from mechanical beings to highly sexualized female robots, yet he always returns to the central theme of robotics—soulless constructs lacking affection, governed by their programmed directives.

Merely the mention of a Ruffo Caselli exhibition ignites a wave of thought-provoking dialogue worldwide. His iconic automatons have been celebrated for generations in multiple countries, including the United States.
