Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Once Again Leads Nation in Pediatric Liver Transplant Outcomes
Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) continues to lead the nation in pediatric liver transplant outcomes—achieving the best one- and three-year patient survival rates in the United States for the second-straight year, according to newly released data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). In addition to these best-in-class outcomes, CHLA also remained among the nation’s highest-volume centers. The team performed 29 pediatric liver transplants in 2025—the most in the Western U.S. and among the top 3 programs nationally.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is launching the first sleep registry in the country for children using Apple Watch as well as a new data collection app called WISE-HARE, or Wearable Intelligent Sensor Enhancement Home Apnea Risk Evaluation. The app was developed to gather streams of high-fidelity data for future research, such as training machine learning algorithms from Apple Watch data to detect sleep disorders and provide crucial information to clinicians that inform patient care decisions.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Los Angeles Unified School District Partner to Offer Telehealth Visits from School with CHLA Specialists
In a first-of-its-kind partnership between a hospital and a local school district, Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and Los Angeles Unified School District have joined together to offer virtual healthcare visits for children at school through the Virtual Care at School Program. The program aims to create a personalized and convenient way for children to receive care at school from CHLA specialists in lieu of being absent for an appointment. At launch on the first day of the 2023-2024 school year, the program will be available to existing CHLA patients 12 years of age or older who attend one of 20 participating Los Angeles Unified schools and are followed by one of the following specialties at CHLA: Adolescent Medicine, Allergy and Immunology, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Genetics and Pulmonology.

The clinics are also offering the Pfizer-BioNTech booster for eligible individuals ages 12 and up; booster shots can be administered five months after the second dose. Flu shots are available on a walk-in basis for those 6 months of age and older. Living Donor Liver Transplants: Better Outcomes for Children
In the United States alone, 500 children will need a liver transplant this year. While liver tissue can come from living or deceased donors, no studies have demonstrated which of these methods leads to better outcomes for children. The data reveal that children who receive living donor liver tissue for transplants are far less likely to experience serious complications like organ rejection.

It isn’t a matter of one needle puncture. Many children coming through the doors of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles are seen for chronic conditions and often require frequent visits.
