Autonomous Growth releases research showing local mortgage brokers receive minimal AI assistant recommendations compared to national brands. Study analyzed 170 responses across five AI platforms, revealing significant visibility gaps during critical borrower decision stages.

-- A research study conducted by Autonomous Growth, part of RReputatioNN, reveals that local mortgage brokers are significantly underrepresented in AI assistant recommendations, particularly when potential borrowers reach critical decision-making stages. The audit analyzed 170 responses from five major AI platforms: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. One independent Phoenix brokerage received only six mentions across all responses, while national brands like Rocket Mortgage appeared 33 times, demonstrating a measurable visibility gap that directly affects how borrowers find and evaluate local mortgage professionals.

These findings coincide with a dramatic shift in consumer search behavior. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey indicates that 45 percent of consumers now use AI tools to find local services, up from six percent one year prior, though the survey questions and context for these two figures differ. Meanwhile, SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed over 350,000 business locations and found that ChatGPT recommends just 1.2 percent of all local business locations, Gemini recommends 11.0 percent, and Perplexity recommends 7.4 percent. Researchers describe this pattern as a local AI blind spot affecting service providers across industries.

The Autonomous Growth audit identified a particularly troubling pattern in the mortgage broker decision process. During the final six questions, which represent a borrower actively choosing a provider, the Phoenix brokerage appeared zero times. Those six questions either compared national brands or used generic terms like "a local lender," creating a vocabulary problem that structurally excludes specific local brokers from consideration. AI assistants learn from existing written content, and comparison articles between national brands vastly outnumber any content comparing local brokers to national options.

The study also revealed a critical distinction between AI recognition and recommendation. When the Phoenix brokerage name was explicitly included in control questions, AI assistants cited the company correctly 6 out of 6 times, drawing on the company's own website. However, when questions focused on the buying decision itself without naming the brokerage, mentions dropped to near zero and were never framed as recommendations, only neutral mentions. For local brokers, being known to AI systems does not translate into being recommended at the moments that drive client acquisition.

In response to these findings, Autonomous Growth now offers an AI audit service designed specifically for local service providers, including mortgage brokers. The audit runs 34 real borrower questions across five AI assistants, tracks mention frequency, identifies which competitors are named and how often, maps where the business disappears in the buying process, and reveals unclaimed market opportunities, such as decision questions no local business yet owns. This diagnostic tool addresses the unique challenge of AI recommendation algorithms, which differ fundamentally from traditional search engine optimization strategies.

Local mortgage brokers can run the audit on their own business at no cost with no sign-up required. The measurement provides brokers with specific data on their AI visibility challenges and competitive positioning as consumer search behavior continues shifting toward AI-powered tools. Autonomous Growth, part of RReputatioNN, developed this measurement to help local service providers address the gap between traditional search visibility and AI recommendation systems, in which local brokers remain largely invisible.
