-- Arthur James Advisory is challenging one of the art market’s oldest conventions: that buyers should simply accept the price they are given.

The company was built around a simple observation. In a market where a work can be offered to a client for £10,000, it can be surprisingly difficult for that client to establish what the work is actually trading for elsewhere, how its price has developed, or how much margin sits between the artist, gallery and buyer.
Arthur James wants to change that.
The firm operates independently of the traditional gallery model, advising clients on acquisitions while analysing artist performance, pricing and secondary-market activity. Its team includes people with backgrounds in larger advisory businesses, bringing a more analytical, client-led approach to an industry traditionally dominated by galleries and dealers.

That approach has put Arthur James at odds with parts of the traditional market.
“We expose the economics of the transaction,” the company says. “A client should know what they are buying, why it is priced at that level and what the evidence is for that price.”
The investment business was created because clients were already making money
Arthur James did not initially set out to build an investment advisory operation.
The company says the investment side developed after clients began seeing significant increases in the value of works they had acquired. Those results led to a more fundamental question: if clients were already buying art partly because they believed it could appreciate, why was there so little structured advice around that decision?
Arthur James subsequently expanded into advisory, treating art as an alternative asset class while recognising that returns are never guaranteed.
The focus is on identifying the evidence behind an opportunity — artist trajectory, supply, demand, pricing history and, critically, what is happening in the secondary market.

The secondary market is where Arthur James sees the biggest opportunity
The company's Secondary Art Market Data Initiative is designed to address a major weakness in the industry: reliable information on what works actually sell for after their original purchase.
A rising gallery price does not automatically mean a rising market value. The real test is whether independent buyers are willing to pay more.
Arthur James is building its advisory proposition around that distinction.
Its argument is ultimately simple: the more information buyers have, the harder it becomes to sell art on opacity alone.
For traditional galleries, that means greater scrutiny of pricing and margins. For buyers, it means having an adviser whose interests are centred on understanding the market rather than simply completing the sale.
Arthur James believes that is where the art market is heading — and it intends to get there before the rest of the industry.
