Study Finds 26-Minute Sleep Gain; Night Sweats Eliminated for 33%
Overheating during sleep affects sleep quality, with up to 41% of adults experiencing disrupted rest from overheating and night sweats. This challenge is especially pronounced for women in the menopausal transition, where temperature-related sleep disturbance sharply reduces quality of life.
A new peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Sleep, conducted by investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, found “significant improvements in sleep quality” among self-identified hot sleepers after switching to LUSOMÉ’s temperature-regulating bed sheets. The study associated LUSOMÉ sheets—100% cotton treated with Xirotex™ Cool—with longer, higher-quality sleep and a measurable reduction in night sweats.
“LUSOMÉ sheets are the first temperature-regulating smart textile to undergo clinical validation, showing benefits for maintaining optimal body temperature during sleep,” said Lara Smith, founder of LUSOMÉ. “With so many unsubstantiated ‘cooling’ claims, we’re raising the bar with peer-reviewed science.”
Study Findings
Design: Non-randomized, pre–post pilot study with within-person comparisons
Participants: 64 adults (89% female; mean age 48) identifying as hot sleepers
Duration: 6 weeks; 2,627 nights of data
Intervention: LUSOMÉ sheets treated with Xirotex™ Cool
Key Findings (as reported in the paper):
• +26 minutes average increase in nightly sleep duration
• Night sweats: Among those with baseline symptoms (75%), 33% saw symptoms eliminated; 42% reported reduced severity
• Heat-related sleep disruption: Trouble sleeping due to heat dropped from 82.5% to 39.7%
• Sleep quality: 69% reported improvement; mean PSQI score improved by 1.94 points (8.0 to 6.1)
Raising the Bar on ‘Cooling’ Claims
These findings suggest that curating the sleep micro-environment—bedding included—can support sleep for hot sleepers. The results point to a promising, non-pharmacologic option for improving sleep in people with vasomotor symptoms.
