Senior Living Providers Experience Major Year-Over-Year Gains in Satisfaction Despite Rising Costs, J.D. Power Finds

Life Care Services and Discovery Senior Living Rank Highest in Segment for Independent Living and Assisted Living/Memory Care Satisfaction, Respectively

With the average cost of assisted living and memory care rising year over year by 10%1 and the average rent for independent living rising between 7% and 9%2, it may come as a surprise that resident and family member/decision-maker satisfaction with senior living providers is on the rise. According to the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Senior Living Satisfaction Study,SM released today, overall satisfaction with assisted living and memory care communities is up 12 points (on a 1,000-point scale) from a year ago, while satisfaction with independent living communities is up 25 points.

“We’re seeing noteworthy gains in satisfaction across all areas of the senior living experience, even in prices paid for services. This shows that independent living residents and family members with loved ones in assisted living feel they are receiving value for the cost of these communities,” said Andrea Stokes, hospitality and senior living practice lead at J.D. Power. “One area showing improvement this year, particularly in the independent living segment, is satisfaction with community staff. That is a milestone achievement for an industry that continues to face staffing challenges.”

Following are some key findings of the 2025 study:

  • Year-over-year satisfaction rises for independent and assisted living: Overall satisfaction among residents of independent living communities is 753, an increase of 25 points from 2024, and overall satisfaction among the family members/decision-makers of assisted living/memory care community residents is 867, up 12 points year over year.
  • Independent living providers deliver value: The year-over-year increase in resident satisfaction with independent living providers is driven by improvements in satisfaction with price paid for services received (+28 points); community staff (+25); and community buildings and grounds (+21).
  • Dining and activities drive satisfaction gains for assisted living: The year-over-year increase in family member/decision-maker satisfaction is driven by improvements in satisfaction with dining (+11 points); resident activities (+8); and resident apartment/living unit (+7).
  • Quality of assisted living care reaches record high: Overall satisfaction with the care provided by staff of assisted living and memory care communities reaches an all-time high of 8.89 points (on a 10-point scale) in 2025.
