WESTERLY, RI / ACCESS Newswire / September 28, 2026 / Jodie Kluver, a professor, author, and founder of The Black Crow Publishing, is continuing to expand her work in creative writing and independent publishing after decades spent in higher education, public administration, and nonprofit leadership.
Kluver founded The Black Crow Publishing in 2024 with a focus on independent literary work and creating space for diverse voices, including women's voices. The venture grew from a career already centered on education, communication, research, and helping individuals and organizations express their ideas more clearly.
In 2025, she published A Woman Remembers (everything) under the pen name J. Byrd. The book marked an important expansion beyond the academic writing and research that had defined much of her earlier career.
"Much of my life's work has been about helping others discover their world and their voice," Kluver said. "Creative writing gave me a different way to explore that same idea."
Kluver has taught at Bridgewater State University since 2006 and has worked extensively across nonprofit management, public administration, fundraising, organizational development, and civic engagement. Her past roles include Director of Development for the Chorus of Westerly, Executive Director of Opening Doors for Westerly's Children, and Program Director for the Massachusetts Certified Public Manager Program.
Her academic research has explored nonprofit resilience, sustainability, citizen engagement, organizational behavior, and voice. She has presented nationally and internationally and has published work in Public Administration Review, Administrative Theory & Praxis, Public Manager, The Bridgewater Review, and PA Times.
Rather than viewing creative writing as a departure from her earlier work, Kluver sees it as another extension of the same interests that have shaped her career.
"I believe nothing is static," she said. "Our work changes, our interests change, and we change. There is value in allowing yourself to grow into something new."
Today, Kluver continues to balance teaching, writing, research, and publishing while exploring how academic thought, lived experience, and creative storytelling can intersect.
